Kaos

A programme of artistic research at the Royal Brussels Conservatory. This recording of KAOS is the result of in depth research made by the composer and pianist Diederik Wissels as part of his role as teacher at the Royal Brussels Conservatory. The project included several stages. First, a detailed study of the musical and historical sources. After that, in-depth analysis of the scores intended to feed into detailed work on composition of KAOS.

“KAOS is a collection of small piano pieces written between 2006 and 2009, 12 of which are on this CD. During this period, I worked and especially analyzed a large number of piano pieces by composer Federico Mompou. His way of going towards the "essential" as in Musica Callada, charms, magic songs, dialogues, and "six preludes" was my source of inspiration throughout the writing of KAOS. For my part, the particularity of Mompou's pieces lies in the appearance of his music: at the same time very precise, constructed and stripped down, but also spontaneous and at times almost improvised. The opposition of these elements has been the common thread in KAOS. »
